Thameslink trains from Luton Airport Parkway reach St Albans in about 11 minutes and St Pancras in 24 to 45, then run on to Blackfriars and London Bridge. The British Library sits next to St Pancras, and Tate Modern and St Paul's are a short walk from Blackfriars. London's national museums are free.
How much of London can you see on a Luton layover?
With 5.5 hours, take the train to St Albans for its cathedral; from 6 hours, the British Library by St Pancras fits. With 8 hours, try the British Museum, or St Paul's, the Millennium Bridge and Tate Modern from Blackfriars. From 8.5 hours, the Natural History Museum, and from 10 hours Borough Market and the Tower of London (Tuesday to Sunday) or a walk from the British Museum to Westminster. Be back at Luton 2 hours before departure.
Every plan below starts and ends at London Luton Airport (LTN). The times in town assume about an hour from landing to sitting on the Luton DART, 4 minutes on the DART to Luton Airport Parkway, the train with its wait, and being back at Luton 2 hours before departure, with your onward boarding pass: the time the airport says airlines want you at check-in or bag drop.
First make sure you can enter the UK: at Luton every connection crosses the border, and most visitors need an ETA or a visa arranged before they fly. Then check the day. On Sundays St Paul’s is open for worship only, and the first Thameslink train that reaches Blackfriars leaves Luton Airport Parkway at 8:45am. Borough Market is closed on Mondays outside December, and the Tower of London opens at 10am on Sundays and Mondays. The walking times in London are TfL’s Journey Planner’s; in St Albans, the walk from the station is the cathedral’s figure and the others are our map estimates.
5.5 to 6.5 hours: St Albans or the British Library
You’ll have about 1.5 hours in St Albans on a 5.5-hour layover, or about an hour in central London on a 6-hour one.
St Albans Cathedral and Verulamium
The closest plan to Luton, and the only one that fits 5.5 hours. St Albans is a cathedral city one stop past Harpenden on the line to London.
- DART to Luton Airport Parkway, then Thameslink to St Albans City: about 11 minutes, and £4.40 off-peak by contactless.
- Walk 20 minutes to St Albans Cathedral, open daily from 9am to 5pm. Go in through the Welcome Centre in Sumpter Yard and allow about 45 minutes inside.
- With 7 hours, walk on through Verulamium Park to Verulamium Museum, the museum of Roman St Albans: open daily 10am to 4pm (last admission 3:30pm), adults £10, under-16s £5 and under-5s free.
- Walk back to St Albans City, about 20 minutes from the cathedral or about 30 from the museum, and take the train back to Luton Airport Parkway, leaving town 2 hours 40 minutes before your flight.
With children. Verulamium Museum has hands-on discovery areas for younger visitors and free activity sheets, and dressing-up clothes at weekends and in school holidays. Its family ticket is £23.
Trains. St Albans City has trains back to Luton Airport Parkway until 12:58am on weekdays and Saturdays and 12:50am on Sundays. On Sundays the first train from the airport leaves Luton Airport Parkway at 6:26am.
The British Library and King’s Cross
The quickest look at London: the British Library is a 4-minute walk from St Pancras, and its permanent Treasures Gallery, which the library says holds some of the most inspiring items in its collection, is free.
- DART to Luton Airport Parkway, then the first train to St Pancras: the Luton Airport Express takes 22 minutes, Thameslink 24 to 45.
- Walk 4 minutes to the British Library and spend about an hour in the Treasures Gallery.
- With 6 hours, walk 15 minutes to Granary Square by the Regent’s Canal, north of King’s Cross; it’s 8 minutes back to St Pancras.
- Head back from St Pancras, leaving town 3 hours before your flight.
Opening hours. The library opens at 9:30am (11am on Sundays) and closes at 8pm Monday to Thursday, 6pm on Fridays and 5pm at weekends. The Treasures Gallery closes at 5pm on Thursday 19 and 26 November and 3 December 2026, and the whole St Pancras site is closed on 12 and 13 December 2026.
Bags. Luggage bigger than 56 x 45 x 25 cm isn’t allowed in, and the gallery asks you to leave backpacks in the cloakroom, which is free, as are the lockers. The cloakroom is closed on Sundays, but the lockers aren’t.
6.5 to 8.5 hours: the British Museum or Bankside
About 1.5 to 3 hours in central London. The two plans here need 8 hours each; below that, St Albans with its museum (7 hours) or the British Library with Granary Square (6.5) fit.
The British Museum from St Pancras
Free, and a walk through Bloomsbury from St Pancras. It needs 8 hours, which leaves about 3 hours 15 minutes in town: 2 hours in the museum and the walk each way.
- DART and train to St Pancras, about 45 minutes from the terminal.
- Walk 27 minutes (1.7 km) south through Bloomsbury to the British Museum.
- Spend about 2 hours inside. Entry is free with a ticket booked ahead.
- Walk back to St Pancras, leaving the museum about 3.5 hours before your flight.
Opening hours. Daily 10am to 5pm, and to 8:30pm on Fridays, so a Friday afternoon landing still fits. Closed 24 to 26 December.
Bags. The museum doesn’t allow wheeled cases of any size, or larger bags. Leave them at the airport.
St Paul’s, the Millennium Bridge and Tate Modern
A plan on Thameslink alone: Blackfriars station is 6 minutes’ walk from St Paul’s on the north bank and 4 minutes from Tate Modern on the south. It needs 8 hours with St Paul’s, or 7 without it.
- DART to Luton Airport Parkway, then Thameslink direct to Blackfriars: 41 to 52 minutes.
- Walk 6 minutes to St Paul’s Cathedral. Sightseeing is Monday to Saturday from 8:30am, with last entry usually at 4pm; adults pay £27 and children £10.50. GetYourGuide sells skip-the-line entry (opens in a new tab).
- Cross the Millennium Bridge to Tate Modern, 13 minutes on foot. The collection is free.
- Walk 4 minutes back to Blackfriars, leaving town 3 hours 15 minutes before your flight.
Pick your day. On Sundays St Paul’s is for worship only, and the first train that reaches Blackfriars leaves Luton Airport Parkway at 8:45am: see Tate Modern and the river instead. Tate Modern is open Sunday to Thursday 10am to 6pm and to 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Bags. St Paul’s takes no bag bigger than 45 x 30 x 25 cm and has no cloakroom. Tate Modern allows nothing bigger than a cabin bag (55 x 40 x 20 cm), and its lockers cost £4 to £8.
8.5 to 12.5 hours: markets, museums and Westminster
About 3.5 to 7 hours in town: enough for the Natural History Museum, Borough Market and the Tower of London, or a long walk from the British Museum to Westminster.
The Natural History Museum
A free museum in South Kensington, reached with one change at King’s Cross St Pancras. It needs 8.5 hours, which leaves about 2 hours 45 minutes there, with time for the Tube each way.
- DART and train to St Pancras, about 45 minutes from the terminal.
- Take the Piccadilly line from King’s Cross St Pancras direct to South Kensington, about 16 minutes (£3 off-peak by contactless).
- Walk 11 minutes to the Natural History Museum and spend about 2 hours inside. Entry is free with a ticket booked ahead.
- Piccadilly line back to King’s Cross St Pancras and the train to Luton, leaving the museum about 3 hours 45 minutes before your flight.
Opening hours. Daily 10am to 5:50pm, last entry 5:30pm; closed 24 to 26 December.
With children. Thameslink’s Kids for £2 offer lets up to four children travel for £2 each with an adult at off-peak times, and on the DART children aged 5 to 15 pay £2.45 and under-5s ride free.
Borough Market and the Tower of London
Lunch at Borough Market, by London Bridge station, then a walk to the Tower of London. It needs 10 hours, from Tuesday to Sunday.
- DART to Luton Airport Parkway, then Thameslink direct to London Bridge: 48 to 57 minutes.
- Walk 7 minutes to Borough Market and spend about an hour and a quarter there.
- Walk 20 minutes (1.5 km) to the Tower of London, beside Tower Bridge.
- Allow at least 2 hours at the Tower, as Historic Royal Palaces advises. Tickets cost £38 for adults and £19 for children aged 5 to 15.
- Or book ahead: GetYourGuide sells Tower of London and Crown Jewels tickets (opens in a new tab).
- Walk 19 minutes back to London Bridge, leaving town 3 hours 20 minutes before your flight.
Pick your day. Borough Market is open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm, and closed on Mondays except from 30 November to 31 December 2026, when it opens every day. It’s closed from 25 to 27 December and on 1 January 2027. The Tower opens at 9am from Tuesday to Saturday and at 10am on Sundays and Mondays, closes at 4:30pm, and takes its last visitors at 3pm.
Bags. The Tower allows no suitcases, large bags or rolling luggage and has no left luggage. London Bridge has no late trains: the last back to Luton leaves at 11:36pm every day.
From the British Museum to Westminster
A long walk across central London: in to St Pancras, out from Blackfriars. It needs 10 hours, or 11 with an hour in the National Gallery.
- DART and train to St Pancras, then walk 27 minutes through Bloomsbury to the British Museum for about 2 hours.
- Walk 17 minutes to Covent Garden, then 10 minutes to Trafalgar Square and the free National Gallery, open daily 10am to 6pm (to 9pm on Fridays).
- Walk 18 minutes down Whitehall to Parliament Square and Big Ben.
- Walk 34 minutes (2.2 km) along the river to Blackfriars and take Thameslink back, leaving town 3 hours 15 minutes before your flight.
Opening hours. The British Museum and the National Gallery are both closed from 24 to 26 December, and the National Gallery on 1 January too. Neither takes wheeled cases: the gallery accepts bags up to 56 x 25 x 45 cm.
Tours in London
No tour picks you up at Luton for a layover: GetYourGuide’s London Luton Airport page lists transfers and lounge access, but no layover tours (seen November 2026). With 8 hours or more, take the train in and join a walking tour or a river trip that starts near St Pancras, Blackfriars or London Bridge, and check that it ends in time for your train back.
Overnight: sleep by the airport, then St Paul’s at opening
Landing in the evening with a flight the next afternoon, sleep at a hotel a short walk from the terminal, then catch an early train to Blackfriars.
Sleep by the airport, then St Paul’s at 8:30am
- Walk to a hotel by the terminal: the Holiday Inn Express says it’s under 10 minutes on foot, the ibis about 5 minutes.
- In the morning, take the DART and Thameslink to Blackfriars, about an hour, to be at St Paul’s Cathedral when sightseeing opens at 8:30am (Monday to Saturday).
- After about an hour, cross the Millennium Bridge to Tate Modern, which opens at 10am.
- Walk 4 minutes back to Blackfriars, leaving town 3 hours 15 minutes before your flight.
Pick your departure. Arriving at St Paul’s at 8:30am and Tate Modern at 10am, you leave Blackfriars at about 11:20am, so this plan needs a flight at about 2:35pm or later, Monday to Saturday. On Sundays St Paul’s is for worship only.
Bags. Leave them at the hotel: St Paul’s has no cloakroom.
24 hours: stay over
With a whole day, combine two plans: Borough Market and the Tower in the morning, then Bankside or Westminster in the afternoon, back from Blackfriars by 12:51am on weekdays and Saturdays (12:38am on Sundays). Or rest first by the airport and follow the overnight plan above. Remember that every bag you carry into town has to come with you: the Tower, the British Museum and the National Gallery won’t take suitcases.
Rest at the airport
London Luton Airport is open 24 hours but lists no rooms in the terminal. Both lounges are after security, so you need your boarding pass; the hotels are landside, a short walk away.
My Lounge and No1 Lounge, after security
My Lounge, in the main departure hall after security and duty free, opens daily from 4am to 9pm, from £37.99. No1 Lounge, by Gate 17, opens daily from 4am to 8pm, from £38, and lets you in up to 3 hours before your flight; earlier entry costs extra, if there’s space. Neither lists showers.
Hotels a short walk from the terminal
The airport lists hotels within walking distance:
- Holiday Inn Express London Luton Airport says it’s the closest hotel to the terminal, under 10 minutes on foot. Check-in is from 3pm and check-out at 11am; breakfast starts at 4am on weekdays.
- ibis London Luton Airport, about 5 minutes (500 m) on foot, Accor says. Check-in from 2pm, check-out by noon.
- Holiday Inn London Luton Airport and Hampton by Hilton London Luton Airport, both on the airport’s list of hotels within walking distance.
This guide gives no hotel prices, because they change by the night.
Tips that make a Luton layover easier
- Book to “Luton Airport”, not Luton Airport Parkway. A train ticket to Luton Airport includes the DART; one to the Parkway doesn’t, and the DART alone costs £4.90.
- Contactless works, Oyster doesn’t. Tap in for Thameslink to Luton Airport Parkway, then pay for the DART separately at its machines.
- Groups save. Thameslink’s GroupSave takes a third off off-peak fares for 3 to 9 adults travelling together.
- Leave bags at the airport. Excess Baggage Company, in the check-in area, is open daily 4am to 10pm. London’s big museums and the Tower won’t take suitcases.
- Check the night trains. Thameslink runs about once an hour through the night from St Pancras and Blackfriars, but not after 1:44am on Saturday nights, and no night trains run from London Bridge.
